Educating in a spirit of audacity and hope

Social Justice Group

Marist

An active Social Justice group exists within the school and its aims are as follows:

  • To raise awareness of Social Justice causes;
  • To act on Social Justice causes where appropriate;
  • To assist with fundraising where needed.

The group usually focuses on a particular area each term and also organises one major event per year. A winter sleepout is held in June in the school grounds from 6pm till 6am in order to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless.

 Donations of warm clothing and rugs will be used by those who sleepout and these will then be passed on to Fred’s Van to distribute to the homeless.

The group also organises the visit of the Red Cross Blood Donor Van and the dates for this year are usually in March and June. Many students are choosing to give blood when the van is onsite.

Other activities have included raising money for disaster victims, inviting guest speakers and attending various conferences on social justice issues.

Fred's Van

Fred's Van is a St. Vincent de Paul Society funded programme consisting of soup vans which travel around areas of Adelaide providing food to the homeless.

This wonderful service to "rough sleepers" has many dedicated volunteers who donate their time to help those who are less fortunate.

Volunteer enquires can be directed to the St. Vincent de Paul Society on (08) 8353 8600 or to volunteering@svdpsa.org.au.
Sacred Heart College Senior students and staff donate their time to the following Fred's Van twice a month on a Sunday evening and a Wednesday evening.
